Welcome to my website, the gateway to my campaign for the Democratic nomination for Cook County District One Commissioner. I hope you will find it informative and easy to use.
 
I also hope you will find it engaging and accessible, which will be two of the hallmarks of my campaign.

I am running to represent you on the Cook County Board because we need to provide real solutions to problems that have been neglected for far too long.  We need to make government more accountable with the money – your money – it uses to operate the departments that you will need to use at some time in your lives.  We need to ensure that Cook County government is efficient with the best qualified staff from top to bottom.

Most of all, in this time of serious economic stress on our families, our neighborhoods and our communities, we need to know that government will be innovative and creative in providing solutions that work for everyone: those who may be in need in the future and those who may not have to use the myriad of services that Cook County provides.

We have to run the most effective County healthcare and hospital system anywhere, but we need to be sure that people look at using quality clinics as their first stop toward good health. We need to champion innovative programs – programs that work – that will help people re-entering society after prison re-establish their lives and not re-enter the criminal justice system. We need to support partnerships that would allow private foundations, cities, community organizations and citizens to foster the kind of economic development that can revitalize our neighborhoods, our communities and our lives.

For this vision to become a reality we need to reform government and restore the confidence in what government can provide to its citizens.   For many, Cook County government has become a picture of bloated bureaucracy and payrolls and inefficient programs.  This culture must change. Each county department and agency must come before County commissioners and justify their spending.  There has to be a real airing of the budget, with vigorous debate. There must be an independent audit to assess the real condition of Cook County’s financial health. I also would endorse the Commissioners’ action to gradually scale back the sales tax increase that ultimately was vetoed by Cook County Board President Todd Stroger.

This change will take time and dedication. As your commissioner, I pledge to keep you apprised of what County government is doing, how I am engaged in the process and how you can play an active role to make this happen. I will send out newsletters, have a strong, interactive web site and hold town hall meetings throughout the District, which includes parts of Chicago, Oak Park, Forest Park, Maywood, Bellwood and Broadview.
