Chicago Tribune Endorsement: "You can fix Cook County"

1st District (West Side, west suburbs): During board meetings, incumbent Earlean Collins often complains about the pressures of her part-time public job, famously moaning "Let us have some peace!" in July because so many voters angry about county taxes were contacting her. We endorsed Collins four years ago, saying we hoped she would help reform this slipshod government. She has failed to do that.

Democrats have a superior alternative in Adekunle "Ade" B. Onayemi, an architect and Oak Park community activist with a solid reform agenda: Onayemi, a native of Nigeria and a naturalized American, even has the moxie to state on his literature that he opposes patronage hiring. He would vote to repeal the rest of Stroger's tax hike, to make permanent the independent board that oversees health services, and to cut the vast bureaucracy by combining offices. The Tribune endorses Onayemi.
