Suburban Job Seekers referred to Cicero One-Stop Center for Job Training and employment services
Cook County District one Commissioner Candidate Ade Onayemi challenged incumbent commissioner Earlean Collins to justify the loss of the only P.O.E.T. office in her district. The Maywood One Stop Center, located at 35 S. 19th Avenue in Maywood, serviced many Oak Park, River Forest and Proviso Township communities with job training and employment services.
“Commissioner Collins brags about chairing the Workforce, Job Development and Training Opportunities Committee for the county board,” Onayemi asserted, “but under her watch she lost the only office in her district that helps constituents train for and find jobs.”
“With the double-digit unemployment numbers in our district, we have never had a greater need for job training and orientation,” Onayemi insisted. “Instead of providing leadership and real service to her district, Commissioner Collins has been missing in action. The Maywood One Stop Center has been a tremendous resource for our suburban communities and the P.O.E.T. program there helped many people find jobs. It is a shame that we have to tell those in need of the services that they have to go to the Cicero One Stop Center,” Onayemi concluded.
Onayemi, an Oak Park resident, is an architect, an Austin community business leader and an officer of the Madison Street Development Corporation, which works to bring development to the Garfield Community.
A long-time champion of education reform, Onayemi served eight years on the Oak Park school board, is a member of the education committee for the Westside Ministers’ Coalition, and is vice-chairman of the Austin Business and Entrepreneurship Academy, part of Austin High School.
